Innovations, Funding and Investments

The Finnish chemical industry aims to be a nature-positive and carbon-neutral sector. The chemical industry plays a key role in creating new sustainable solutions, and the sector’s growth and competitiveness are based on strong research, development, and innovation efforts.

Finland has top-level expertise and strong conditions for developing RDI (research, development, and innovation) activities. The country is committed to increasing R&D spending to 4% of GDP, providing excellent investment opportunities. Innovations in the chemical industry not only solve current challenges but also open doors to entirely new applications and technologies.

In recent years, the focus of innovations in the chemical industry has been on bio-based and recyclable materials that reduce waste and environmental impact. For example, advanced biochemicals have revolutionized the sector. Additionally, technologies related to the circular economy, such as chemical recycling, enable efficient waste utilization and the production of valuable new raw materials.

In the energy sector, contributions from the chemical industry are critical in replacing fossil fuels. New hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels, more efficient battery materials, and advanced catalysts allow for cleaner and more sustainable energy use.

Pandemics, chronic diseases, and an aging population require continuous advancements, and chemistry enables us to improve quality of life and extend lifespans. The development of biological medicines and personalized treatments, for instance, has transformed healthcare.

The chemical industry is also a pioneer in digitalization and artificial intelligence. Modern research tools such as simulations, digital twins, and data analytics enable the development of new materials and processes faster and more accurately than ever before, shortening the journey from laboratory to market.

The green and digital transition can only be achieved through significant investments in new innovations and technologies. Cutting-edge chemical research, cross-industry collaboration, and the large-scale adoption of sustainable processes ensure that the sector remains a key driver of global well-being and economic growth.
