The 12th Helsinki Chemicals Forum united top experts and brought key chemical safety issues into the global debate

The Helsinki Chemicals Forum 2021 presented five live panels and 35 top class specialists from EU and third countries in its programme. Well over 200 participants viewed the conference broadcast on both conference days.

This year, the Helsinki Chemicals Forum 2021 (HCF) conference was organised as a virtual event instead of a physical one, since the ongoing pandemic continued to cause a major impact on the ability of international participants to travel.

– The virtual conference offers both opportunities and challenges. We are pleased with the number of participants which demonstrate our aim to reach more delegates online than live has been achieved. We were also happy to provide the participants a live experience which allowed everybody to raise questions to the panelists, says Geert Dancet, Secretary General of HCF.

The two-day Forum included five expert panels. The key topics were the forthcoming fifth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM-5), green chemical policy, the new EU chemicals strategy, transparency & risk communication, safer substitution, and the current chemicals management within textiles. The discussions were moderated by UNEP, EU, CEFIC, ECHA, OECD and Chemical Watch.

HCF was opened by Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU Commissioner for Environment, who also took part in the high-level debate with Marco Mensink from CEFIC and Jeremy Wates from EEB. Together with the moderator Andrew Turley they provided a helicopter view on the new EU chemical strategy for sustainability which combines ambitious plans for innovation of industry with ambitious plans for higher protection of human health and the environment.

ECHA’s Executive Director Bjorn Hansen gave his keynote speech on functioning of the chemical EU registration system set by REACH and CLP.

The conclusion report of the 2021 conference will be edited by the Chemicals Watch, the media partner of the Forum, and published in June. The recordings of the Forum will be available on the HCF website till the end of August.

The next Helsinki Chemicals Forum will be organised next spring on 30-31 March, 2022, at the same time with ChemBio Finland, the event for the chemistry and biotechnology professionals in the Nordic Countries and Baltic regions.

The Helsinki Chemicals Forum is organised by the Chemicals Forum Association in co-operation with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the European Commission, The European chemicals and metals industry Associations CEFIC, the City of Helsinki, the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland and the University of Helsinki. The media partner of the event is Chemical Watch. Next Helsinki Chemicals Forum will be organised 30-31 March, 2022. | http://www.helsinkicf.eu | #ChemicalsForum
