Kiilto’s Debonding on Demand Adhesive Honored at the Responsible Care Awards

A member company of the Chemical Industry Federation, Kiilto, has received a special mention at the RC Awards for its groundbreaking adhesive innovation. The 2024 EU Responsible Care recognitions were announced on Monday, December 2, 2024.

The recognized innovation, Debonding on Demand, allows bonded material surfaces to be separated using heat or microwaves, for example. This eliminates the need to damage the surfaces, making the dismantled materials recyclable and significantly reducing waste.

“Removable adhesive bonds are a completely new solution that enables easy repairability and circularity for products in the construction industry and many others,” says Raija Polvinen, Kiilto’s Chief Ecosystem Officer.

“The innovation has the potential to disrupt the construction industry and promote the ‘design for disassembly and adaptability’ principle. There are already several players in the construction sector developing solutions for easy adaptability of buildings.”

Polvinen emphasizes that sustainability is integrated into Kiilto’s research and development from the very beginning. During the project planning phase, environmental impacts are evaluated, along with how the sustainability of the solution compares to similar existing solutions on the market.

This year, the awards distributed by Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, highlighted projects and initiatives that shape the future of the chemical industry in Europe, in line with the spirit of the Antwerp Declaration under the European Industrial Deal program.

Raija Polvinen expressed her satisfaction with the special mention at the RC Awards:

“Competitions are a great way to showcase responsible solutions and gain some publicity for new innovations. They also provide an opportunity to gauge the value of your innovation compared to others through the perspective of an impartial jury.”

RC Awards categories included:

  1. High-quality jobs in Europe (skilled workforce)
  2. Time for Change (circular economy & climate neutrality, digitalization & innovation, transition to safe and sustainable chemicals)
  3. Enhancing Europe’s Competitiveness (innovative projects, partnerships)
